House passes bill banning late-term abortion procedure

The House banned late-term abortions on Thursday and supporters have the necessary two-thirds vote to override another veto by President Clinton. The House voted 295-136 after two hours of emotionally wrenching debate.

Republicans hope Clinton, who supports abortion rights, would agree to a ban now that a key abortion-rights advocate, Ron Fitzsimmons, lied during the debate two years ago. Solomon, the Rules Committee chairman, was quoted as saying: "We need to pass this bill again and give it to the president, give him another chance to do the right thing, because the only reason he vetoed it was because of those lies by Ron Fitzsimmons."
